The article analyses the mechanisms of voltage collapse and reaches the conclusion that it is necessary to make use of detailed simulations in order to study real cases. The performance levels required from the simulation programs are established. A summary description of the Eurostag code highlights the program's algorithmic bases. An example of simulation of a real system shows the suitability of the method for the study of far reaching incidents which can affect large interconnected systems.
