Abstract
(en) This paper examines the interaction between discourse and prosody in a corpus of 51 lexical subjects (placed before the verb) preceded by the contrastive adverb par contre. We seek to determine whether a strong prosodic boundary can be inserted after the subject to delimit the scope of the contrast introduced by the adverb. The results show that a strong prosodic boundary is inserted only when the subject is contrastive, i.e. when an explicit alternative exists in the context. Prosody, though not systematically, thus enables the delimitation of the scope of a contrast introduced by a discourse marker.
