Abstract
Bonding of sulfate groups is the main surface modification occurring when polycarbonate plates are oxidized by K/sub 2/Cr/sub 2/O/sub 7/-H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. Contact of un- or oxidized polycarbonate with a supersaturated ferric solution gives rise to deposition of ferric hydroxide which produces a charge reversal and allows adhesion of a dense layer of yeast cells. Successive application of the two treatments avoids a loss of the cell adhesion promoting efficiency when the support is dried after the the Fe treatment; this is attributed to better anchoring of ferric hydroxide on the strongly negative surface obtained after oxidation.
