- Examining contemporary “square” citizen movements and the singularity of the political-ritual institution of the Great Dionysia in classical Athens, this paper addresses the possibility of considering radical democracy as an institution, in line with Cornelius Castoriadis’ project of autonomy and as opposed to Claude Lefort’s notion of “savage democracy.” Therefore, a new schema of political thought will be proposed: discordant harmony. This schema aims to pave the way for thinking about the dialectical dynamics of the democratic institution, resulting from its contradictory movements: that of the search for stability in an instituted tradition, and that of critique, that is, the internal renewal of an instituting movement that may lead to insurrection.
