The objective of this thesis was to assess the functional exercise capacity and lung function in congenital heart disease (CHD) pediatric population. In the first study we observed that the most severe CHD patients show a lower exercise capacity and lung function. The observed correlation between cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) and spirometry was weak to moderate. The second study showed that the most frequent detected pattern was restrictive, while obstructive pattern was more frequent in non-cyanotic patients. In the third study, we observed that there was no training effect in children during the 6-minute walk test (6MWT), but there was an encouragement effect on the walked distance. For this reason, we think that guidelines should take these results into account. The fourth study revealed that in healthy children, the 1-minute Sit-to-Stand test (STST) is useful to quantify heart rate response during submaximal exercise. In the fifth study, we proposed an alternative equation to be used in those cases where CPET cannot be performed, containing the STST as a surrogate of peakVO2 in CHD children. Finally, in the sixth and last study, we did a validation of the Physical Activity Questionnaire in French.
