Abstract
Current brain-computer interface (BCI) systems are mostly used for communication with people with late-stage motoneuron disease. Applications such as web-browsers tend to be designed for a certain BCI paradigm, e.g. P300 or sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) BCIs. We previously extended our P300 BCI, which has been used by people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for communication, in order to incorporate the use of both BCI painting and web-browsing applications. This was achieved by mapping the individual fields of the control matrix to functions that control the respective application. Ideally, the very same applications could be used with SMR BCIs to alleviate the need for a user to adapt to a new paradigm. This was achieved by designing a new, universal menu application that is controllable with a SMR BCI based on the detection of event-related desynchronization and synchronization (ERD/S) of those rhythms. In this design command icons are placed in six hexagons that are circularly arranged after the hex-o-spell interface [1]. The BCI is used to control an arrow which extends from the inner centre outward to select the intended command in one hexagon or to rotate the arrow further toward the neighbouring hexagons. We illustrate how a P300 web-browser and a P300 painting application can be ported to the SMR menu without having to adapt the respective application.
