This book chapter aims at providing a clear overview of how life cycle assessment (LCA) can be used to support judicious ecodesign in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). The main goal is to put interested designers on concrete tracks to integrate environmental considerations in the design of IoT systems over their entire life cycle. More especially, we target questions such as (i) what tools are currently available, (ii) where to find examples based on existing works, (iii) what barriers can be encountered, and (iv) what directions can be interesting to explore? We specifically focus on LCA, as it is a quantitative methodology based on already-existing tools that can be used by engineers in the process of designing technology. Given that these considerations are still far from common in the design of IoT systems, we propose a streamlined overview of current practices and perspectives to foster life cycle thinking in this field.
