Because of the recent larger availability and higher performance of pile testing and monitoring equipment, pile dynamic testing has become part of many present day civil engineering projects. This report covers the past and state-of-the-art technological aspects of pile dynamic testing: testing methods, loading equipment, and measurements, including their acquisition and interpretation. Three major pile dynamic testing methods are distinguished based on means and objectives: high-strain testing performed primarily for bearing capacity, low-strain testing performed primarily for integrity, and high-strain kinetic testing performed for bearing capacity. Historical and recent references are provided on each topic listed.
