Abstract
(en) During recent excavations (1999-2010) in the Syrian coastal harbour town Tell Tweini (ancient Gibala) various musical instruments were excavated in Iron Age layers. Conch trumpets were unearthed in a temple complex (around 800 BC), while the clay rattles were found in a nearby street. This paper will discuss the clay rattle in the Levantine and Ancient Near Eastern musical tradition during the Bronze and Iron Age, including the innovation in shapes and function of the clay rattle.
