- Abstract
- The necrotizing sialometaplasia is a rare salivary gland pathology. In the canine species, it is characterized by partial or complete, unilateral or bilateral infarction of the maxillary or sublingual salivary glands. The coagulation necrosis is associated to ductal epithelium hyperplasia with squamous metaplasia and arterial thrombosis. The Terriers appears to be predisposed. Clinically, a progressive swelling of the gland is observed accompanied by retching, dysphagia, ptyalism and vomiting resisting classical treatment, Predisposing factors are observed such as trauma, upper respiratory infection or sialosis. The management comprise surgical ablation of the pathological glands combined to Phenobarbital administration.
