- Introduction. In the last years, the number of performed allergic tests increased substantially according to epidemiological data. In Belgium, a request was addressed to the National Institute of Health insurance and Disability for reviewing the nomenclature of the allergic diagnostic procedures. Effectively, it allowed the specialists only one code "Allergen identification by serial tests 350055-350066" independently of the nature of the test (specific codes were attributed to dermatologists for the exploration of allergic dermatitis by epicutaneous testing). Methodology. The argumentation was based on epidemiological (literature) and economical data. These elements considered the evolution of the performing of the diagnostic test "350055-350066" between 1995 and 2004 (national statistics), the cost of realization of each test and an estimation of the type and number of diagnostic tests performed by the pediatricians, internists, chest physicians and ENT specialists in 2005 in Belgium. Without a national bank of data, a questionnaire was sent to these specialists in Belgium, with a total or partial hospital activity, to declare the number and type of tests performed in 2005 among <= 7 and >7-year-old patients. Results. Fifty-six specialists returned the completed questionnaire. The data were analyzed by establishing the practice of each group of specialists. These were used by the technical committee of the National Institute to estimate the impact of a new nomenclature over the budget of the Social Security. Conclusion. The established request was introduced in 2006 and gave access to a new nomenclature in application in Belgium since May 2009. (C) 2009 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
