- Individuals who are diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age are often carriers of a pathogenic variant in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, and many young women in this situation are interested in preserving future fertility, if possible. Reproductive counseling in this situation can be complex due to the risk of passing on the variant, as well as the implications on their own fertility, as the mutation can impact ovarian reserve, fertility potential, and other factors.
