- In a context of globalization where economic homogeneity is accompanied by increasing cultural heterogeneity, the tension between the universal and the particular becomes more acute. Indeed, the treatment of differences is central in intercultural dynamics, especially when it comes to living together in heterogeneous societies. This research is precisely interested in this issue of living together through the intercultural experience of Chinese students in Belgium, one of the largest international student communities in the world (Unesco, 2020). By collecting the testimonies of 48 students from five Belgian universities and following a focus group over one academic year, we sought to understand the experiences of these students in the face of the challenge of living together with their differences.Contrary to the idea of a superficial diversity encounter often put forward, our results reveal a more complex reality.Indeed, the confrontation of cultural differences highlights an identity process embedded in power dynamics, influencing both their relationship to the Self and to the Other. This study thus shows that it is essential to consider the question of the Other not only as an encounter between cultural differences, but as a multidimensional phenomenon where an identity process is inscribed in the relationship of power. And this, on the cognitive, symbolic and social level. By exploring these complex interactions, this research contributes to a better understanding of the contemporary issues related to living together in a world marked by the chanllenge of plurality.
