- Abstract
- Has the interpretation of the difference between Verbal and Performance IQ practical significance ? Despite disappointing and contradictory research results, we think it has, providing some methodological rules are respected. The first one is : never try to make a separate appraisal of Verbal-Performance discrepancy, but take it in the context of cognitive, behavioural and social information about the individual. The second is : refer to the standard error of the difference, which is 12 points (p. < 0.05). Finally, take into consideration the importance of the Verbal-Performance IQ difference in the normal population. We analysed this difference in the French standardisation sample of the WISC-R. Based on this analysis, we emphasise some reference values useful for the practitioner.
