Benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BZRAs, benzodiazepines and Z-drugs)are often used for anxiety and insomnia treatment in older adults, despite an unfavourable risk-benefit ratio. This thesis aims at developing a behaviour-change intervention towards BZRA deprescribing in nursing homes (NHs), with insights from behaviour-change theories and implementation science. We first evaluated current BZRA use in Belgian NHs, showing that 52.4% of NH residents receive BZRAs. We then evaluated barriers and enablers for BZRA deprescribing and selected intervention components specifically targeting these barriers and enablers. It resulted in the END-IT NH intervention, which encompasses 6 different components. Finally, we performed a cluster-randomized controlled trial to assess the feasibility of implementing and evaluating the END-IT NH intervention. Our results showed that the intervention was feasible but would require several refinements before moving on to a larger scale implementation. This thesis sets the first stones of a future intervention towards BZRA deprescribing in Belgian NHs.
