Abstract
Pervaporation was used to enhance transesterification reactions of methyl acetate and n-butanol to yield n-butyl acetate and methanol. This reaction was heterogeneously catalyzed by a strongly acidic ion-exchange resin (Amberlyst 15). Several commercial membrane types were used to establish their grade of application at different concentrations of the binary mixture methanol/n-butyl acetate. Self-made membranes were used to improve the performance of the separation. Comparison in terms of permeability and selectivity of methanol showed the potential of pervaporation for organic-organic separations. The mass transfer through the membrane was discussed to elucidate the separation mechanism on a microscopic level.
