Report on CIP-EAPR Workshop 2017 on Biocontrol and Biostimulants Agents for the Potato Crop, Held During the 20th EAPR Triennial Conference, Versailles, France, on Tuesday July 11, 2017
The workshop was targeted to pinpoint key research topics for enhancing biocontrol and biostimulant strategies in the potato crop. Based on example presentations by the different selected speakers, several areas were open to discussion: Peter Kromann emphasized the need for capacity building and training on the use of biocontrol methodologies, for an increased awareness and knowledge on such new methodologies, pointing out registration and formulation issues for application at field level. He also raised the overall question of access to the technology and benefit sharing. Claude Bragard drew the attention on the potentialities of biocontrol and biostimulant strategies, emphasizing the fact that if numerous ongoing research projects were conducted at the laboratory scale, in vitro, only a limited number would end up in the field or actually be recorded as commercially available product. Louis Mercy stressed the fact that biostimulants have been known for a very long time and stressed both their advantages and also the difficulties encountered in developing such an approach. Involved in the development of a biocontrol product, Frédéric Lakaye underlined key points to address, like the need to validate the “proof of concept” in partnership with universities and to clearly identify the potential market with representative end users, not to forget the “unpaved road” from proof of principle to full-scale technology validation, and finally to keep an eye on the overall price of the raw material for the product.
