Abstract
(en) This paper synthesises key historical, economic, and conservation issues surrounding the elephant ivory trade. It traces the evolution of aesthetic preferences and uses of ivory in specific contexts, and shows how colonial expansion reshaped these practices and incorporated ivory into globalised systems of extraction and circulation. The study discusses the current pressures on elephant populations and places these developments within the scope of international regulation, particularly CITES, outlining the debates these frameworks continue to generate. It also addresses the museum-related issues associated with ivory, including conservation practices, provenance research, and debates around decolonisation. Furthermore, the paper examines the recent expansion of the mammoth-ivory trade, often presented as a legal alternative while generating new environmental and heritage-related controversies.
