The study investigated the onset of active caries lesions in fi rst permanent molars in a sample of Belgian children. In the Brussels region, children attending the 1st grade in 19 primary schools were sampled (n = 473, median age = 6). Forty-seven percent of the children were free from cavitated lesions in their primary dentition and presented a moderate caries experience with dmft scores of 2.39 8 0.14 and dmfs scores of 5.08 8 0.35.
