- Croton zambezicus Muell. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae) (Syn. C. amabilis Muell. Arg., C. gratissimus Burch.) is a shrub or small tree widespread in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is considered in Benin as a magical tree. The leaves decoction is widely used in African traditional medicine to treat microbial infections, hypertension and fever. The leaves are also used in some countries as home deodorant. This plant belong to the huge Euphorbiaceae family and to the Croton genus, both are known for their frequent toxic diterpenes content. The analysis of the phytochemical composition of the leaves of Croton zambesicus was very interesting because, in spite of their wide use in African traditional medicine, no previous study on their composition has been undertaken before. Purifications of the cytotoxic dichlormethane extract of the leaves with different preparative chromatography techniques such as HSCCC or MPLC gave 7 pure compounds. These compounds belong to the pimarane, trachylobane and phytane type of diterpenes. Among these, 5 were new molecules isolated for the first time in the plant kingdom before. Their structure has been elucidated by spectroscopic method (IR, EI-MS, 1- and 2-D NMR, X ray diffraction).
