- Although the First Testament often speaks of violence, it also describes a path to go through it. This path goes via justice and law which try to put a brake on violence. But they show themselves unable to put an end to it definitively in so far as they can be corrupted by that which they are supposed to combat. Thus a stage beyond violence has to be envisaged which is rather of the order of wisdom as is illustrated in the story of Joseph. This article essentially envisages the question on the basis of a thematic analysis of violence as it appears in the first chapters of Genesis; the reflection is continued with some other texts off the Torah and the prophets.
