Abstract
(en) [Clinical and therapeutic feastures on malaria] Malaria or paludism is an infectious disease caused by a Plasmodium parasite that is transmitted by the bite of female mosquitos of the genus Anopheles. With 660,000 deaths in 2010, i.e., a 26% decrease compared to 2000, among which 90% occurred in Africa and nearly 86% in children under 5 years of age, malaria continues to wreak havoc in endemic and epidemic areas. The clinical manifestations are very diverse, including flu-like symptoms with high fever (39 or 40°C), chills, intense headache, abdominal pain, and body aches. Any fever occurring in travelers returning from the tropics must raise the suspicion of malaria until proven otherwise. The blood smear and thick drop are the gold standard for the diagnosis of malaria. Treatment should be initiated quickly, especially in cases of severe malaria. Artesunate is the treatment of choice, while quinine remains an effective treatment and a valid alternative to artesunate
