Belgian potato production is increasing each year and is facing both the strengthening of European policies regarding the availability and the use of pesticides, and major economic losses due to disease pressure. The important potato pathogens are fungi (e.g. Phytophthora infestans causing late blight and Fusarium solani producing dry rot), bacteria (e.g. Pectobacterium carotovorum, responsible for tuber soft rot and Streptomyces scabies agent of tuber common scab) and viruses. Within an environmental-friendly integrated pest management approach, the search for alternative crop protection strategies has led to study bacterial and fungal agents with proven antagonistic abilities against these plant pathogens. This work aims at isolating and characterizing indigenous bacteria associated with potato-agro-systems for disease biocontrol. More than 2.600 strains of Bacillus spp. and Pseudomonas spp. were isolated from Walloon soils, compost and potato plants. On the basis of this collection, broad screenings of antagonistic activities against P. infestans, F. solani, P. carotovorum and S. scabies were performed and allowed the selection of 54 Bacillus spp. and 16 Pseudomonas spp. displaying a high biocontrol potential. These strains were identified by sequencing their 16S rRNA gene, and preliminary genetic characterizations indicated that they do not represent any pathogenic potential to vertebrates or plants. In vivo assays are currently performed to verify these preliminary results. The antagonistic activities displayed by the selected strains pointed out that a versatile range of secondary metabolites is produced. PCR screenings for genetic determinants and other in vitro tests showed that molecules related to β-1,3-glucanase, AHL-lactonases, bacilysin, difficidin, chitinases, fengycin, plipastatin, iturin, surfactin, macrolactin, siderophores, Zwittermicin A, among others, might be produced by the selected strains. Currently, the strains with the highest antagonistic activities are being intensively studied in order to identify the different diffusible metabolites and/or volatile compounds they are able to produce
