Abstract
In our digital age, the importance of media literacy cannot be overstated. It is vital for critical thinking, informed citizenship, participation to all aspects of social life, and the defense against disinformation. Yet, as our media landscape evolves at breakneck speed, a lingering question remains: how can we effectively assess media literacy? While media literacy assessment has been discussed extensively in the scientific literature over the years, the practice of evaluating media education activities in terms of the development of the media literacy of their beneficiaries has remained mostly confined to pilot projects run by researchers, rather than becoming standard practice for media educators. And yet, making media literacy assessment an integral part of the practice of media education is undoubtedly one of the keys to the challenge of its widespread implementation. Our presentation introduces a timely response to this challenge in the form of a comprehensive guide, targeted at media educators, designed to help them navigate the complex challenge of assessing media literacy. We will offer a comprehensive overview of the guide, discussing its implications for pedagogy and research. Real-life examples will illustrate its practical application in authentic learning contexts, aligning with commonly shared media literacy objectives. We aim to spark discussions and share ideas, all with the ultimate goal of advancing media literacy research and practice.
