(en) What is at stake in the episode in Genesis presenting Judah and his daugfhter-in-law Tamar in a rather wild tale (Gen 38)? An attentive reading of the plot and a careful situating of the intelligent way in which the narrator introduces the reader into his world of values permit one the better to grasp the subtlety of the characters' play and to clarify from this angle the human and ethical stakes in this story. Essentially, it has to do with the bonds which closely unite on the one hand, distrust, deceit and death, and on the other hand courage, truth and life.
