Land conflicts were at the bottom of the 1998-2004 Ituri conflict. The competition for land was a major element in the struggle for political and economic power between local communities, as well as between local communities and the urban elite. There is, however, no unique pattern. This chapter analyses the diversity of land conflicts in Ituri and shows how land practices are very much determined by the local political economy. The analysis reveals how the involvement of the state, the justice system and traditional authorities in land dynamics may differ widely within each local context. This means that the identification of possible strategies for solutions is not straightforward as such solutions have to be context-specific.
