Abstract
(en) Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have predictable anticoagulant effects with established efficacy and safety profiles [ 1 ]. In general, drug monitoring is not necessary, but specific drug measurement can be an urgent need in specific clinical situations [ 2 , 3 ]. DOAC specific laboratory tests have been developed for several commercial coagulation platforms. All of the tests developed for the anti-Xa drugs are based on the inhibitory effects of DOACs on activated factor X (FXa) in the assay system. Currently, few laboratories have implemented these tests. They are relatively expensive – the price amounts to approximately 10 EUR if more than 10 tests are requested per week and may be a multiple of that amount if the number of requests is lower – but more importantly, they are difficult to handle in a 24/7 routine laboratory setting due to a complex measurement system with specific calibrators and controls.
