Abstract
In the Bisitun inscription, the Achaemenid Darius claims to have defeated an Elamite rebel king Athamaita. Indeed, the Old-Persian name Athamaita is a hypocoristicon for the Elamite royal name Atta-hamiti-Inshushinak. Several scholars therefore identify the late Elamite rebel Athamaita with the Neo-Elamite king Atta-hamiti-Inshushinak. Subsequently, this paper questions whether the rebel Athamaita could be personally identified as the late Neo-Elamite king Atta-hamiti-Inshushinak based on historical arguments.
