The Elamite word sugir ‘king’ with its multiple orthographies, going from the syllabic variants su-un-gìr, su-un-ki-ir, zu-un-ki-ir, zu-kir to the logogram SUNKI (EŠŠANA), refers to the highest office in the Elamite political system, i.e. the king of Anzan & Susa. Next to the principal meaning of the word ‘king’, the secondary meaning of ‘sheikh, ruler of a certain group of people, or ruler of a restricted territory within the limits or on the outskirts of the Elamite kingdom’ should be considered.
