Abstract
Spinal anesthesia is an old technique in children. It was first usedat the beginning of the twentieth century but fell in disuse up towhenAbadjian and his colleagues in Vermont reintroduced it in frag -ile neonates and infants. Spinal blockade was initially claimed tohave minimal hemodynamic effects in healthy premature and termneonates. However, it decreases mean arterial blood pressure andmoderately alters cerebral blood velocity but without major effectson cerebral oxygenation as measured by NIRS. [...]
