Abstract
The paper will consider the narrative and generic resources which help European filmmakers to represent the situation of illegal migrants today, with the idea that this contemporary situation is very often related to national histories and inscribed in the cultural landscape of the host countries. In this perspective, I would examine pre-and remediation practices (Erll 2012) which go beyond the national contexts, integrating the fate of migrants in the European culture. My attention will focus on the use of an ancient memory, based on mythological allusions, and referring to a cultural memory (Assmann 1995) situated in a distant past: how this ‘archaic’ memory can contribute to give shape to the migrants journeys? To answer this question, the case of the epic structure will be examined, notably in Eden à l’Ouest (Costa-Gavras, 2009) which multiplies intertextual references to the Odyssey. More broadly, my aim will also be to examine the cognitive status of films like Eden à l’Ouest or Les Mille et Une Nuits (Gomes, 2015) where the realistic or documentary mode is united with an allegorical dimension.
