Abstract
The specific mechanisms through which the perception of pain arises from neural activity are not yet fully understood. Ongoing neural oscillations have been shown to be flexible and dynamic in nature, integrating and coordinating information across the human brain. It is therefore plausible that they play an integral role in the translation of nociceptive stimuli into the perception of pain. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to identify cortical correlates of pain perception using scalp and intracerebral electroencephalography, specifically targeting the modulation of ongoing oscillations using a “frequency-tagging” approach. By modulating the perception of the applied stimuli in a series of experiments through distraction, expectation and stimulus saliency, this thesis aimed to establish a link between the induced changes in pain perception and the modulation of ongoing oscillations.
