Abstract
Birds exhibit outstanding performance in their flight. In an effort to understand the mechanisms leading to such achievements, we develop a model of flapping flight. The model uses a multi-body system representing an articulated wing and couples it to a flow solver based on a vortex particle-mesh method. Combining both, we are able to simulate the flight of a bird, stabilise it with closed-loop controllers and represent its wake.
