- In 1946, the African American economist Abram Lincoln Harris (1899-1963) looked back critically upon seven decades of “scholastic-canonist teaching” that had sought to offer solutions for the joint problems of economic organisation and social discontent by drawing on Thomas Aquinas’s philosophy.¹ Paying special attention to the scholastic economics of Heinrich Pesch (1854-1926), a German jurist and economist belonging to the Jesuit Order, Harris warned against the neo-scholastic movement’s “pious hope” of re-establishing “an organic or corporate economy” against the twin threats of social Marxism and libertarian capitalism.
