Abstract
Objective : The aim of this research was to assess the concurrent validity of the 2-MWT and investigate whether it could be used instead of the 6-MWT to assess gait among patients with stroke. Material / Patients and Methods : Two retrospective analyses were conducted. The first analyze concerns a group of 20 patients with stroke who performed both the 2-MWT and the 6-MWT. The second analyze concerns a group of 82 patients with stroke who performed the 6-MWT while measuring the distance covered each minute. All patients were in subacute or chronic post-stroke phase., and able to walk independently. Results : The 20 subjects achieved an average (SD) distance of 130 (45) meters on the 2MWT and 364 (127) meters on the 6MWT. The distances covered during the 2MWT were highly and linearly related to the distances covered during the 6MWT (r=0.99, p<0.001). The 82 subjects achieved an average distance of 381 (132) meters during the 6MWT and 130 (45) meters during the first 2 minutes of the 6MWT. The distances covered by stroke patients during the first 2 minutes of the 6MWTwere highly and linearly related to the distances they covered during the whole 6MWT (r=0.99, p<0.001) (Figure 2). The distance covered during the first two minutes of the whole 6MWT allowed to predict 98% of the variance of the 6MWT result. Discussion - Conclusion : In conclusion, given its good clinometric properties and its advantages in time and fatigability, clinicians and researchers could reasonably use the 2MWT when assessing walking capacity of patients with subacute or chronic stroke.
