Abstract
his research report aims to present some initial conclusions on the paradoxes with which Catholics are confronted around intimacy and sexuality in the second half of the Belgian 20th century. It thus argues for a religious history of sexuality, which considers the fact that sexual (r)evolutions also take place in massively religious populations. This report deals with the female picture given by a strategy of affective and sexual education, the 'preparation for marriage'. The analysis is made through the case of the Jeunesses Indépendantes Catholiques Féminines (JICF), a women's youth movement for 'independents' – young girls from the middle-class and the bourgeoisie. Using oral and archival sources, this report explores how to answer these questions. - In what ways did the Belgian Catholic world perform the gender and sexual roles after WWII? - In what way can the Cardijn ‘see-judge-act’ method be applied to the stereotypes offered to these girls?
