- <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Digital restitution projects are expanding, providing source communities with renewed access to their heritage, long scattered by colonization. The AFRISURGE project embodies this approach through the creation of a database documenting collections from northeastern DRC, housed at the Tervuren Museum. It integrates archival records and research on the geolocation and provenance of objects, including an ivory trumpet, whose study underscored the need to reassess certain data through cross-referencing sources. Community engagement, fostered through workshops, is key to tailoring the restitution to various formats, including offline access. This evolving project continually adapts to local realities, ensuring lasting cultural reconnection. This study first explores the concept of digital restitution before delving into the technical aspects of AFRISURGE, highlighting provenance research challenges. Finally, it offers a critical perspective on digital restitution initiatives, examining their potential to reshape heritage accessibility and ownership through concrete examples.</jats:p>
