Abstract
Since the excavation of the fortress of Arras-Actiparc, new pottery data have permitted us to review the question of a military presence in the North of Gaul. Several sites of a defensive nature, demonstrated by the presence of metal objects and pottery imports, indicate a close contact with far-off regions. For a long time the metal small finds have served as sole proof of the military character of a site, while the pottery has been considered as negligible. But taking chronology as a determining factor, the pottery approach lets a phenomenon of recurring forms, rare imports and imitations of Mediterranean types appear, indicating the particularity of the site’s status. The real function of these sites is still uncertain, but the pottery image is different from what is seen on civil settlement sites. The article also shows that the pottery image can lead to the identification of the military character of a site, using for the Late Republican and Augustan periods, the example of Arras-Actiparc, and for the Augustan and Neronian-Flavian periods the Rouvignies case.
