- This work gives a state-of-the-art synthesis on shark luminescence. We present information on the different luminescent sharks, their luminous patterns, the histological organisation of their photogenic organs, their specialised squamation, and the characteristics and putative functions of their bioluminescence. We illustrate differences between the two families of luminescent sharks and give a hypothesis for the bioluminescence acquisition in these two groups. We also highlight the limitations of our current knowledge of these luminous organisms; finally, recent discoveries on one model species, the velvet belly lantern shark (Etmopterus spinax), are being presented.
