While initially a legal concept, discrimination has attracted the attention of social scientists, in particular sociologists, social psychologists, and economists. Each discipline has brought its own perspective on the phenomenon, enriching and complexifying its understanding. Intense debates have arisen on the meaning, causes and impact of discrimination as well as on which policies are adequate to combat it.
