Abstract
This contribution, we want to demonstrate the importance of a combined approach that combines the archaeological study of the plasters with the archaeometric one. Only by exploiting and combining the methods of the different disciplines can we attempt to answer some frequently asked questions, such as: what analyses are currently carried out in the various laboratories to determine the chemical composition of the pigments and the geological components of the preparatory mortar layers of ancient paintings? What kind of data do these analyses provide? How far can the archaeometrician and archaeologist go in using and interpreting the data obtained? Does the archaeometric study provide scientific proof for the so-called stylistic identification of decorators' workshops, i.e. does finding the same "recipes" for mortar and pigments in a single urban context really mean that the work of a single workshop has been identified? The pre-Adriatic pictorial contexts of Ostia present themselves as fertile ground for this type of investigation. In particular, the archaeometric study of the Fourth style plasters brought to light in various sectors of the city has made it possible to acquire new information on pictorial production in the 1st century AD and on the work of the workshops, probably local workshops, which used the same raw materials, the same pigment mixtures and the same decorative repertoire.
