- This chapter starts from a special perspective, namely from the role of the Brussels Bouwmeester (government architect). The function has its origins in the Dutch “Rijksbouwmeester”, which has existed for more than 200 years. In Belgium, this role was only introduced at the turn of the last century, but it has since expanded to encompass a broad and diverse remit: the Bouwmeester is no longer restricted to government building assignments and now aims for a higher quality of the overall spatial environment. The first Belgian Bouwmeester began working in Flanders in 1999. Afterwards came several Bouwmeesters working at the city level: in Antwerp, Ghent, and Charleroi.
