Abstract
(en) [Fire in the operating room, prevention and management: A narrative literature review] Despite the decline of the incidence of fire in the operating room, thanks to the use of less flammable anaesthetic agents, about 600 fires are reported each year in the USA and this is likely to be underestimated. The management is also declared suboptimal in half of the cases when fires occur. In France, a lack of knowledge of fire management by caregivers has also been highlighted. For a fire to occur, an element triad must be present, composed of an oxidizer (oxygen (O 2 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O)), a fuel (alcoholic disinfectant, hair), and energy (electric scalpel, endoscopes, LASER [Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation]). This triad is found in the operating room and is generated by the various care providers (surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses). For patients and caregivers, the economic and legal damage, are significant (average interest damages of $120,000). On the other hand, the costs of the preventive measures are minimal or nil. Scientific societies have made recommendations through experts discussion, clinical practice, surveys, and current literature review that need to be broadcasted.
