Abstract
(en) The case of immigrants’ children born in their parents’ receiving countries has attracted lots of social, political and scientific interest regarding their social mobility, integration and identities. Such attention, however, has overlooked the peculiar situation of 1.5-generation migrants (i.e., children who migrated to their parents’ receiving country at an early age). Since the end of the 1970’s, the majority of Filipino immigrants in France have been women, mostly mothers separated from their families left in the Philippines. Through family reunification programs, some of them were able to make their family members come to France, which lead to the formation of a Filipino migrant 1.5-generation having experienced both the Philippine and French school systems. Fieldwork in Paris focusing on 1.5-generation Filipino migrants reveals that most of them faced or have been facing a “double dislocation” of their lives and habits: the first dislocation happened when one or both of their parents left them in the Philippines to work abroad, while the second took place when they immigrated to France and became reunited with their parent(s), a time marked with family problems arising from long separation and new challenges to adapt to the French society. Hence, the rich trajectories and collective experiences of 1.5-generation migrants can yield important insights on the interplay between migration and the family.
