Congenital toxoplasmosis (CT) and cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection can cause morbidity, lifelong disabilities and mortality. The main objective of this thesis was to unravel the burden of both congenital infections in terms of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs). To achieve this goal, we focused on available evidence, identified data gaps, and developed an up-to-date methodological framework for assessing disease incidence and burden of disease. The epidemiology and burden of CT and cCMV infection in Belgium and by extension of cCMV infection in the European Union were assessed. In addition, we estimated the toxoplasmosis sero-epidemiological status of pregnant women in Northern Vietnam. Although data gaps remain, CT and especially cCMV infection were shown to have an important impact on public health.
