Abstract
My research focuses on local participation as seen through Howard Becker's approach. From this perspective, I aim to offer a complementary reading of the literature which argues that some sections of the population are less well represented, by deconstructing the idea that it is complex to involve all residents of an area in participation projects. To do this, and in line with Becker's thinking, the area (in this case the municipality of Mons, Belgium) is not studied primarily from the point of view of the socio-professional categories induced by socio-spatial disparities. Instead, the focus is on the multiplicity of forms of participation that can be found, beyond the institutional formats that are traditionally most taken into account. One of these forms of participation is the neighbourhood Facebook groups that are the focus of our research. What if the problem of representing all residents is not linked to socio-economic disparities, but to the fact that participation is normatively defined to include only certain formats that are most valued and appreciated?
