- (en) The Unitatis redintegratio decree launched the official ecumenical conversion of the Catholic Church. The first section of the article recounts the context and challenges that surrounded the drafting of the two Vatican II documents on ecumenism and the eastern Catholic Churches; the second section gives an overview of the reception of these documents from their enactment to the present. The third section is dedicated to the perspectives and current key issues raised by ecumenism and the existence of the eastern Catholic Churches: beyond building awareness amongst the People of God, and rebuilding it for each generation, decisive progress depends on the broad application and official acceptance of the “differentiated consensus” between the Catholic Church and other Churches, going so far as the acceptance of an asymmetric balance due to the inherent uniqueness of each Christian denomination.
