Abstract
(en) One hundred human muscles were obtained from biopsies made for diagnostic purposes. In 18 cases, the patients had neither histological signs of muscle damage nor clinical signs of a neuromuscular disease: this group was taken as a reference group, as close to normal as possible. The native isomyosins were separated by electrophoresis in glycerol-Pi in Pi-polyacrylamide (method in Maréchal et al., Eur J Physiol, 138, 421, 1984) and quantified by densitometry. In 46 of the remaining 82 cases, the relative proportions of isomyosins could not be distinguished from those of the reference group. There remained 36 'abnormal' cases with twenty-nine different patterns of isomyosins. The pathological changes observed in the native isomyosins of diseased human muscle are frequent (36% of the cases) and extremely variable. We could not correlate this variability with any specific diseases.
