Abstract
The Syriac manuscript collection at the Matenadaran in Erevan contains amulet manuscripts and scrolls of East Syriac tradition that originate from Nestorian tribes in Hakkari. The amulets in the Erevan collection belong to the oldest knowns texts. The contribution gives a chronological overview about Eastern Syriac amulets and its main content. It then focuses on two fragmentary scrolls (both with shelf number MM Rot, syr. 72) containing 14 charms with miniatures. They address particularly to women and their specific fears and problems caused by demons and the “Evil Eye”. The first scroll amulet was written in 1755 by the priest ‛Abdīscho‛ in Gagoran, the colophon of the second one has been lost but can be dated to around the same period. The Syriac texts are edited, translated and commented.
