Abstract
(en) [Mental health programs in countries affected by mass violence : why, for whom, and how?] In recent years, the need to address the consequences of disaster-affected population has been increasingly recognised. Many mental health programs have been set up in countries affected by mass violence (i.e.: Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Algeria, Kosovo and Cambodia). Nevertheless, some controversies remain concerning the need to implement such programs (why?), about the target people (for whom?), and about the way to implement these programs (how?). The objective of this article is to clarify these controversies through a five years teaching and research experience at the psychiatric department of the Faculty of Medicine of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. According to this experience, we believe that mental health issues must be addressed in such context. Nevertheless, target groups of mental health programs should be better defined. Finally, next to psychosocial initiatives, the integration of individualized mental health care within the primary care should be implemented
